Once again Aprilia has remained faithful to the tenets of its development philosophy, and has transferred the experience gained from competition directly into the production of the new 2008 SXV. Ever since its debut, the world’s first twin cylinder supermotard has been constantly developed and perfected by the immense technical know-how of Aprilia Racing. Because of this, race after race, the SXV demonstrates a potential the competition cannot match.

DESIGN
As with all Aprilias, a tremendous amount of care and attention has been lavished on even the smallest details on the SXV. As a result the SXV boasts a unique, unmistakable styling that is nevertheless fully functional in achieving unrivalled performance, because first and foremost even the standard SXV is a genuine competition motorcycle.

But the SXV is not just a pretty face. Your gaze is held by an abundance of advanced technology. One glance at the V2 engine, mixed trellis and aluminium frame, strong swingarm and unique exhaust system with twin silencers under the rear fender and you cannot escape its magical attraction.

Whatever side you look at it from, the SXV presents a host of stunning technical solutions, all enhanced by new 2008 racing colors to express the aggressive nature of this born-to-race machine.

As you would expect from Aprilia, the latest SXV is packed with intelligent design solutions. Fixed air ducts, for example, allow the fuel tank to tilt up for easy access to the airbox. And the quest for technical perfection has led the design team to tweak even small details on the basis of input from the champions who have raced the SXV.

ENGINE: CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION
The amazing engine is, of course, the centre piece of SXV technology. Aprilia was the first manufacturer in the world to believe in the validity of the V twin for supermotards, a segment in which all other marques still cling rigidly to single cylinder engines. Aprilia’s high-tech V twin design has been proven to be very reliable in competition. Even homologation for road use has not compromised the technology and performance of this exceptional engine, which is produced entirely by Aprilia. Since the earliest stages of the design process, the engine has evolved to keep pace with chassis development and to give the SXV an unbeatable mix of power and handling.

The 77° V angle is the result of extensive testing, aimed not only at boosting power but also at reducing vibration. As a result Aprilia’s engineers have been able to eliminate engine balance shafts. Despite this the engine still vibrates far less than any single cylinder alternative.

The cylinders themselves are integrated in the crankcase and have replaceable wet liners. This unique layout has allowed the engine ancillaries to be arranged in a way that achieves extremely compact dimensions. The results are amazing: the Aprilia V twin is one of the most compact V twins in the world, and smaller in size than many singles of similar displacement. All design choices have been taken in order to obtain maximum power plus an extended useful power band. The sophisticated electronic engine management system, developed by Aprilia Racing, incorporates numerous innovations for the off-road sector.

The injection system features 38 mm throttle bodies (40 mm on the 550) and is managed by a programmable control unit.

Reduced unitary displacement has allowed Aprilia to develop an extremely compact and lightweight crankshaft. The engine is more responsive to variations in throttle opening as a result, and the bike as a whole is faster and easier to handle thanks to the reduced gyroscopic effect from the crankshaft.

The single overhead cam configuration with four titanium valves per cylinder head represents an ideal compromise between compact size, light weight and high performance.
Thanks to its advanced technology, the engine is also an extremely silent running and ecological engine. Technology, after all, should mean reliability and longevity as well as high performance. The engine touches new heights in this direction, and permits extremely easy access to parts requiring regular maintenance like the spark plugs, oil filter and air filter.

Just as much effort has been put into weight reduction, and the engine sets a new record for a V twin with an electric starter. Abundant use has been made of prestige lightweight materials. The central crankcase sections are in aluminium-silicon alloy; external engine casings are in magnesium; the valves are in titanium; and all gears are exceptionally light in weight.

The choke is new too, and features a knob on the airbox instead of a handlebar control. Even the air filter has been improved and is now made from a sponge material derived from that used on Aprilia’s official racing machines.

SXV 2008 VDB Replica
Developed entirely from the input of Aprilia Racing, the SXV 2008 VDB Replica is the pinnacle of Aprilia’s competition machines. With no further modifications whatsoever, this motorcycle is able to compete in and dominate any competition in the world. The SXV 2008 VDB Replica is the first step in the evolution of the machine that Aprilia will be entering in the 2008 Supermotard World Championship.

The 2008 VDB Replica differs from the standard 2008 SXV in a number of important technical details that make this already highly competitive machine even faster on the track. The 77° V twin engine, available in 450 and 550 cc versions, is substantially similar to the standard power plant but features modifications to a number of fundamental transmission parts. The multi-plate wet clutch incorporates a sophisticated slipper device to make handling smoother and more efficient on entry into bends, and the gearbox features new ratios plus a brand new electronic control unit linked to the ignition system, allowing the rider to avoid using the clutch when shifting from one gear to another, resulting in faster gearshifts and less weight transfer under at-the-limit riding conditions.

Just like the standard 2008 SXV, the new VDB Replica offers two different engine mappings that can even be switched during the course of a race simply by pressing a switch on the handlebars. This unique feature lets you adapt the engine’s power delivery to changing track conditions and levels of tyre wear.

The chassis too incorporates various improvements. The frame is lighter still, thanks to design changes mainly involving the die cast aluminium side members, and the swingarm is shorter and lighter than on the standard SXV. At the front, a mighty, 50 mm fork with three different offset settings is bolted to two aluminium yokes machine from a single billet. The brakes are completely different too. The combination of a Brembo single piece radial front caliper and a 320 mm wave disc represent the state of the art for this type of machine.

Among the other elements that make the SXV VDB Replica unique are its Alpina 16.5″ front and 17″ rear wheels with hubs machined from single billets, carbon fibre fuel tank, stepped seat to prevent the rider sliding back under acceleration, Arrow under-seat exhaust and super-lightweight titanium fasteners.

THE m.y. 2008 RXV: EVOLUTION CONTINUES

The design of the new Aprilia RXV 4.5/5.5 model year 2008 owes much to the concept of constant evolution in the name of competition. Experience gained in the Enduro World Championship, which saw Aprilia Racing at the top of the field, plus valuable hints and suggestions from four times world champion Stefan Merriman, the team’s top rider, have enabled Aprilia’s engineers and designer to transfer advances from racing to production. Impressive team work has led to a number of major improvements over the 2007 bike, making the 2008 RXV even more “race ready”, and better equipped to satisfy the demands of professionals and amateurs alike.

Aesthetically, the 2008 RXV looks meaner than ever thanks to new graphics, a two-tone black and red seat, brand new, lightweight racing headlight, and a distinctly aggressive nose. Even the tail light is new. In conjunction with general refinements, these important new details have also led to a significant reduction in dry weight, down by 4 kg to only 113 kg.

A great deal of work has also been done to ensure the sort of ergonomics needed for effective competition use. The new fuel tank blends in better with the overall design of the bike, enabling the rider to shift his weight around more easily. The new handlebars have eliminated the cross-bar and feature more practical and race-oriented controls. The latest RXV makes it even easier for man and machine to blend into one, without any annoying interference from structural parts. The suspension (featuring a 45 mm upside down fork at the front and a monoshock at the rear) also incorporates new settings suggested by the team official riders, for improved stability on fast sections and better damping over rough ground.

Though now homologated to Euro 3 standard, blistering performance is guaranteed from both engine sizes, 449 cc (RXV 4.5) and 549 cc ( RXV 5.5).

The main improvements to the engine on the 2008 bike concern the electronic management system.
This now lets you switch between two different mappings by pressing an easy-to-reach button on the handlebars. This extremely useful feature allows you to select “full power” for use under conditions of good grip or a “soft” setting for more controllable power over challenging surfaces. This exceptional riding aid has been appreciated by expert riders (the system was first tried out in the world championship), and enthusiasts in general. With it, one click is all you need to have the right power to match changing conditions.

Despite their truly impressive performance, both versions of the engine now boast extended service intervals, among the longest in the category.

The choke is new too, and has been moved from the handlebars to the filter box, which contains a new sponge filter derived from the official racing machines. The 2008 model year RXV also offers a choice of two types of exhaust silencer. The RXV 2008 is fitted as standard with classical and seductive under-seat tail pipes. Exceptionally, however, brand new stainless steel side mounted silencers that can be fitted on racing circuits are also delivered along with the bike. These have been specially developed in conjunction with Arrow to deliver smoother power right across the useful engine speed range.

Completing the list of innovations are brand new, ultra-compact, ultra-light digital instruments designed to give you all the information you need, and restyled direction indicators.

THE V2 ENGINE
The amazing V2 engine is the natural centrepiece of the SXV and RXV. Aprilia was the first manufacturer in the world to believe in the potential of V twin engines in a market segment where nobody has ever had the courage to try. Impressive results in top level racing have shown that Aprilia was right. This exceptional engine (made entirely by Aprilia) has now been transferred to Aprilia production motorcycles. Totally reliable on the racetrack, the V2 engine has not been deprived of any of its technology or performance by homologation for road use. Engine development also proceeded hand in hand with chassis development from the word go, to ensure that these bikes handle and perform as totally integrated machines.
The 77° V angle between the cylinders is the result of innumerable tests aimed at maximising performance and minimising vibrations. The new engine vibrates far less than any single without even requiring a balancer shaft.
The cylinders are integrated in the crankcase and are lined by replaceable wet sleeves. The intelligent design of the V2 has also permitted engine accessories to be arranged in an extremely rational way, keeping the powerplant as compact as possible. The results are amazing: Aprilia’s V twin is one of the most compact in the world, smaller than many singles of similar displacement.
Design solutions were specially selected for maximum power and a wide power band. The sophisticated electronic engine management, developed by Aprilia Racing, introduces a number of innovations for this type of motorcycle. The fuel injection system features 38 mm throttle bodies (40 mm on the 550) and is controlled by a programmable ECU. Another market first is the fact that the SXV engine features an extended drive shaft to allow the sprocket to be placed further out. This intelligent solution allows racing tyres to be fitted without risking contact with the chain.

Reduced displacement per cylinder has permitted use of an extremely compact and lightweight single-piece crankshaft. The gyroscopic effect of the crank is therefore dramatically reduced. The engine responds instantly to throttle input, making the whole bike faster and more agile. The inertia under acceleration and deceleration typical of large bore engines has also been reduced, permitting engine speeds never before seen on this type of motorcycle. The 450 supermotard red-lines at an amazing 13,000 rpm!

Valve gear based on a single overhead cam and four titanium valves per cylinder gives the best possible compromise between compactness, light weight and performance.
Aprilia technology, of course, means more than just performance. Reliability and durability are just as important. The V2 engine sets new standards in this direction, and also guarantees beautifully easy access to all parts requiring regular service like plugs, oil filter and air filter. The SXV and RXV also boast far longer than average service intervals.

The same sort of effort has gone into weight reduction. The engine sets a new record for a V twin, even with its starter motor fitted! This has been achieved by an abundant use of super-lightweight prestige materials. The central crankcase sections, for example, are made from aluminium silicon alloy. All covers are in magnesium; the valves are in titanium; and the entire gear train has been made lighter than ever before.

The engine is specially tuned to suit the type of motorcycle. The gear ratios are also precisely calculated for supermotard use in the case of the SXV or enduro use on the RXV. Even the injection and ignition mapping have been modified to give the two engines the right character and performance for the bike; higher revving on the supermotard, smoother and torquier at low to medium revs on the enduro.

CHASSIS
An uncompromising machine like the SXV or RXV demands a unique and effective chassis. The perimeter frame was developed in conjunction with the engine and features a tubular steel trellis structure, interference fitted to pressed aluminium side plates to form an extremely rigid assembly. The engine also forms an integral part of the chassis, acting as a load-bearing element and contributing to exceptional overall rigidity.

The variable section aluminium swingarm is another example of brilliant industrial design. Far more than just an element of style, this is the most rigid swingarm on any motorcycle of this type. Rising rate linkages operate a multi-adjustable monoshock with piggy-back cylinder and double high/low speed settings.
The upside down fork (45 mm on the RXV, 48 mm on the SXV) is calibrated differently for the supermotard and enduro. The fork is fully adjustable, so that you can set up your own suspension action exactly as you want it.

The swingarm on the SXV is wider than on the RXV to move the chain further out and allow the bike to fit rear wheels of up to 6.5 inches.

BRAKES
The unrivalled technology and performance of the chassis are supported by a fantastic braking system. The RXV boasts advanced calipers with lightweight wavy discs (270 mm at the front) for unrivalled braking control in even the most challenging conditions.

The brakes on the SXV are designed for sheer power and feature a 320 mm floating disc with a radial caliper for GP-level braking performance.

The 240 mm rear disc and single piston caliper provide the perfect balance between stopping power and ease of control.

Andrea Acquaviva, wanted to go even further. During this year’s International Motorcycle Exposition (EICMA) in Milan Italy, Bimota unveiled an even more extreme and technologically advanced DB7 — the Oronero.

Bimota has exploited weight saving structural carbon fiber for tail sections in both in its DB7 and signature hub center steering Tesi 3D with tremendous success. Now in the next natural step, Bimota DB7 Ononero boasts a carbon fiber frame and swingarm.

Appearing for the first time in a production motorcycle, Bimota has now developed a structural carbon fiber frame material in cooperation with the engineering and manufacturing of BRBike. This is advanced technology formerly exploited in Formula 1 race cars and military aircraft, substitutes the traditional steel and aluminium structures with this incredible ultra light material.

The Ononero’s frame and swingarm share the same external dimensions of the standard DB7, but are
devoid of traditional welds and mitred junctions. The result is an up-to-now unthought-of featherweight chassis.

The 6 Kg reduction in weight with this advanced frame and swingarm results in a completed bike with an astounding overall dry weight of 164Kg, and with 164 hp, the Oronero has an almost the magical ‘power to weight’ ratio.

Additional weight saving innovations include a titanium rear shock spring and lightened ‘wave’ front brake discs.

Further innovations for the Oronero includes new race derived all digital GET instrumentation, which is
virtually a stand alone, dedicated computer. The advanced meter monitors the Oronero’s engine systems but also the bike’s dynamic performance including lap times, service due warning, time and a long list of customizable features. Further the instrument features built-in onboard GPS, that recognizes which track you are circulating, automatically records lap times via GPS, and later allows you to visualize and analyse track sessions on your PC. The Get instrumentation has many expandable functions, including active suspension monitoring and more.

The rear section of the bike is crafted from structural carbon fiber, eliminating the need for a sub-frame. The weight-saving advantage of carbon fiber is also exploited for all fairing sections, fenders, chain guards and instrument supports. Further savings come from the titanium silencer, new ultra-light Bimota wheels plus machined aluminium frame plates, controls and chain adjusters. The DB7’s road manners are inspiring and confident thanks to the choice of superior materials, suspension, brakes, frame, wheels and controls. Utilizing the best components from development partners such as Brembo, Marzocchi and ExtremeTech, combined with Bimota’s own ultra-light wheels and frame, thrilling and track-proven performance is ensured.

Bimota chose to power the DB7 with the spectacular World Superbike dominating Ducati Testastretta Evoluzione engine. Ducati, a partner of Bimota from the beginning, has developed the Testastretta into the world’s most powerful production twincylinder, while retaining all the advantages of the L-Twin configuration. It’s a perfect match to the Bimota formula and guarantees excitement with every twist of the throttle.

DB7 Power

The 1098 Testastretta engine

The Testastretta Evoluzione engine is the pinnacle of Ducati’s development and perfection of the L-Twin engine. World Superbike dominance for the last 15 years is the result of their continual commitment to twin-cylinder technology and the 1098 Testastretta Evoluzione, the most powerful twin-cylinder production engine in history, is a fitting reward to the continued ingenuity of their engineers.

Highly ‘over-square’, the 1098 sports a massive 104mm bore and a short 64.7mm stroke. To optimise the benefits of the new big twin, the completely redesigned cylinder-heads are combined with advanced MotoGP induction technology to produce an incredible 160hp of pure excitement.

The 1098 cylinder-heads feature a reduced angle between intake and exhaust valves, allowing highly efficient, straight intake ducts to feed newly shaped combustion
chambers through large valves (42mm inlet, 34mm exhaust), operated by radical camshafts.

The potential of the new cylinder-heads has been optimised by feeding them with MotoGP developed elliptical throttle bodies. With a 30% increase in air flow over conventional throttle bodies, the new elliptical shape contributes significantly to the power of the DB7.

Impressively, the 1098 is one of the lightest Ducati Superbike engines ever, thanks to the close scrutiny of every component including transmission gears and gear selector drum as well as the oil pump and primary gears.

The DB7 1098 benefits from additional Bimota enhancements including a new fuel injection system has been developed for the DB7 employing Magneti Marelli 12 hole micro fine spray injectors, controlled by an advanced Walbro ECU (engine control unit). The Walbro system is highly flexible in its tuning capacity, a great advantage during development and for racing applications, plus it enjoys the simplicity of diagnostics using a standard windows based PC.

Finally, the 1098 is complemented by a Bimota designed exhaust system. Exhaust header pipes are formed of 52mm stainless steel and route to a catalytic converter mounted under the engine. The exhaust then exits to an efficient right side mounted titanium silencer. Of course, the DB7 responsibly complies with the strict Euro3 emission standards.

DB7 Chassis

Hybrid-trellis frame

The DB7 frame is the most advanced evolution of the Bimota hybrid-trellis design. The composite structure employs mitred and welded thin wall CrMo4 (Chrome Moly) tubing and machined 6082 AC 100 Aluminium Alloy. The classic round tubes of the original trellis design have been replaced for the DB7 with oval section tubes, in a 50mm x 30mm dimension with 1.5mm wall thickness. The trellis section joins the new larger more robust alloy plates, and these work in harmony with the engine as a ‘stressed member’ of the frame group. The result is a substantial 2.3kg reduction in weight, yet with torsionally increased rigidity. What you feel as a rider is confident and consistent road holding and stability.

Swingarm

The new DB7 swingarm is constructed with the same oval tubing and machined aluminium of the frame. With the swingarm pivoting directly in the engine cases and using an advanced GP style rising rate linkage system, rear wheel travel is highly responsive and accurately follows even the most demanding road surfaces. An important feature of the system is the ability to adjust ride height, independent of spring pre-load and other suspension settings, via an eccentric top shock mount. This is a critical feature when perfecting suspension set-up.

Structural carbon fiber

The tail section of the DB7 is crafted in structural carbon fiber, an advanced material and methodology widely used in the aircraft industry. Its use contributes significantly to the DB7’s lightweight and simplicity of form. This superior technical solution eliminates the need for a separate rear sub-frame, and effectively lowers the center of gravity of the bike.

DB7 Suspension

Front suspension

The DB7’s Marzocchi Corse RAC 43 forks are secured with machined aluminium crowns, the lower crown using triple screws. The cartridge type forks, feature nitrite coated sliders for smooth consistent action, and are fully adjustable. Rebound damping offers 32 clicks of adjustment and compression offers 13, with further adjustment for spring preload that is easily accessible externally at the top of each fork. Additionally, each fork leg features an exclusive Bimota machined aluminium caliper mount. With 120mm of precision controlled wheel travel, road holding is accurate and confident both on the track at maximum speed and spirited sport rides on the road.

Rear suspension

Rear wheel travel is controlled by the outstanding ExtremeTech 2v4 shock. Specifically developed for the DB7, it is constructed of fully machined aluminium and features separate high and low speed damping adjustments, for both compression and rebound, plus spring preload. As a result, the 2v4 can be accurately tuned for any riding style or track condition.

Monobloc brake calipers

For a motorcycle with the performance of the DB7, superior stopping power is fundamental, so the new Superbike mounts only the best; Brembo Monobloc racing calipers. The M4-34 calipers are machined from a solid block of alloy and the result is a single piece unit that has much higher rigidity and resistance to distortion, for maximum stopping power during extreme braking. Combined with 320mm discs, world championship level braking performance is in the hands of every DB7 rider. Super light-weight wheels

Fitting lighter wheels has always been the racer’s way to improve the handling and track ‘feel’ of a race bike. This normally expensive upgrade, is standard fare for the DB7. Designed in-house and manufactured exclusively for Bimota, the new ten spoke wheels are ultra-light and dramatically reduce the critical moment-of-inertia, contributing greatly to the DB7’s braking performance and ease of direction change. Brake and clutch controls

The DB7 controls follow the quality and performance priority of the entire bike. Bimota has selected the race specification Brembo ‘radial’ pumps for both front brake and clutch actuation. Moreover, the billet machined levers, a Bimota exclusive, offer a wide range of ‘reach’ adjustability, ensuring comfort and control for every rider.

Premium carbon fiber

Look closely at any World Superbike or MotoGP racebike, and you’ll find an all carbon fiber fairing, fenders and tail section, so of course you’ll find the same on the DB7. The aggressive GP inspired body design is finished in the Bimota team colours of red and white over black carbon fiber, and at a glance, the DB7 seems to be in motion even when at rest. In addition, the Bimota sports carbon fiber instrument mounts, chain guards, licence plate bracket, and when combined with the structural carbon fiber rear tail section, titanium exhaust silencer and the billet aluminium used throughout, it’s clear why the sleek and aerodynamic DB7 feels so light and confident on the track.

Instrumentation

Ease of use, daytime visibility and accuracy are the fundamental elements of the best instrumentation, and the DB7 delivers just that. A big analogue rev counter, paired to a large LCD screen with multiple digital readouts are essential in design and perfectly placed for quick access to information while underway. The various functions available are retrieved using the two input buttons which are designed for use even with gloved hands.

In addition to the expected displays of time, distance, water temperature and time for service, the DB7 offers further race oriented features. An ‘over-rev’ indicator lamp, also called a ‘shift-light’, is positioned next to the rev-counter and illuminates to warn the rider that maximum rpm has been reached. The instrumentation also offers complete timing and recording of racetrack performance. Actuated by the starter button, up to 20 laps can be recorded and reviewed after your track session. Recorded information includes time elapsed, maximum rpm, and maximum speed achieved for each lap.

Engine
At the heart of the new Bimota DB7 is the Ducati 1098 Testastretta Evoluzione engine. Powerful, and light, it makes the kind of power that excites the heart with each twist of the throttle, yet its linear power delivery allows entering and exiting the turns fast a confidently controlled experience.

Frame
The DB7 introduces a new hybrid oval tube trellis frame that utilizes lightweight machined plates in its design. The same engineering solution is used in the unique rear swingarm for a package that not only delivers rigidity and predictable handing, but also lends a harmonized technical look to the bike.

Suspension
The innovative rear suspension links the swingarm directly to the engine and employs an advanced Extreme Tech rear shock developed in cooperation with Bimota. The fully adjustable shock attaches to the SPB (Bimota progressive system) progressive linkage system, for maximum control and traction in the corners. The rear suspension is offset to the right side, allowing space for the rear cylinder exhaust system.

Upper and lower fork crowns are billet machined and mount fully adjustable Marzocchi Corse forks with 43 mm sliders with DLC (diamond like coating) treatment for smooth and predictable reaction to the tarmac.

Wheels, Brakes and Body
The alloy forged wheels are built specifically for Bimota design and are some of the lightest most torsionally rigid produced in the world. The powerful front brakes utilize twin 320 mm discs and radially mounted Brembo four pad four piston callipers. On the back a floating 230mm disc matches to a Brembo 2 piston calliper.

The top fairing is formed of structural carbon fiber and supports the instruments and headlamp, eliminating the need for a separate subframe. The rear tail section is also made of structural carbon fiber and also benefits from the same elimination of a separate subframe. Combined they significantly reduce the overall weight of the bike.

The digital instrument panel combines analog and digital readouts. The unit records 20 lap times, and top speed each lap.

The narrow fuel tank, with a capacity of 26 liters, has been sculpted to be extremely thin between the legs and matches perfectly the seat to maximise rider control and comfort. With a seat height of only 800mm, riders of all heights can enjoy the performance of the DB7.

Combine all of the DB7 innovations and you have a bike that weighs-in at an incredible class leading 170 kgs.

The DB7 bristles with fine CNC machined details including the rear frame plates, engine mounts foot rests, rear swingarm sections, chain adjuster plates and both clutch and front brake levers.
