RSV4 R, A WINNING LINEAGE

An instant winner. The RSV4 Superbike ridden by Max Biaggi, Shinya Nakano and – for one spectacular foray – by Marco Simoncelli, was an unstoppable phenomenon in the 2009 world championship reserved for production derived machines, with an incredible debut season that culminated in one win, nine podium finishes and a fourth placing in the world championship for Max Biaggi before the final round in Portugal. These superlative results demonstrate – in no uncertain terms – the technological supremacy of a machine that has proved to be competitive right from the first incredible outing of the V4 engine. A project conceived not just to create a motorcycle that delivers the utmost in performance, but one that also allows the rider to make full use of every last iota of its competitive potential. The excellent results achieved by all the champions who have raced the bike have not come by chance.

Aprilia RSV4 R is the latest product of this winning project, a no-compromise hypersports motorcycle: ultra-technological and innovative, a machine that gives riders the means to constantly raise the bar of their own personal limits. Design

Usually, when talking about a sports bike, design plays a minimal role as it has always been dictated by set rules demanding large faired surfaces.
This has all changed now, because the Aprilia RSV4 R rewrites the rule book with its incredible, revolutionary looks. Its minimal fairing showcases instead of hides the technological superiority of the bikes chassis and mechanicals. In doing so, the frame and engine cross over from being purely technical or functional elements to become integral parts of the design. Aprilia RSV4 R is clad in an incredibly close fitting skin that emphasises its forms while also being extremely functional and instrumental in maximising performance.

Just look at the top fairing, a brilliant example of how form and function can be fused to perfection. The quest for ideal breathing conditions for the V4 engine gave rise to the bike’s uniquely distinctive face. The gaping dynamic air intakes not only generate optimum overpressure in the airbox, but also visually separate the headlights completely from the rest of the top fairing.

The tail fairing is another distinguishing trait of the RSV4 R: outrageously compact and swept upward, its seems to trail away from the rest of the bike.

Smaller, lower and narrower than any other 4 cylinder bike has ever been or could be, extreme compactness is the greatest strength of the RSV4 R. On top of all this is the almost obsessive pursuit of perfect ergonomics (crucial for perfect control) which has always distinguished Aprilia’s sports machines.

The 65° V4 engine: The state of the art in superbike engine technology

For years, Aprilia has known that the narrow V configuration is the ideal engine solution for maximum performance, mass centralisation and dynamic bike balance. Used in the past for the marque’s sports twins and revived for the RSV4 Superbike project, this engine architecture immediately proved to be competitive on the track.

The 65° V4 engine in the Aprilia RSV4 R is very closely related to the powerplant which, with Max Biaggi at the helm, has proven to be mind-bendingly quick on the track. An engine delivering incredible performance which also allows a remarkable degree of freedom in the design of the chassis. Thanks to this engine, the chassis engineers have been able to create a superlative chassis architecture worthy of the reputation of Aprilia’s finest hypersports machines.

In addition to the engineering exclusiveness of a configuration that is without par anywhere in the world, the technical advantages of Aprilia’s 65° V4 are:

” The engine sits perfectly within the frame for optimised mass centralisation
” The possibility of creating an ideal chassis layout, with the pinion shifted far forward and a long swingarm
” Absolute slimness; with overall width comparable to that of a twin cylinder bike

The engine was entirely developed by Aprilia’s in-house R&D division, a centre of technological excellence and one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in Europe, which benefits from the invaluable support of the highly successful Aprilia Race Division. The goal of the engineers was not just to achieve class beating performance but also to make the engine much more usable than any of its rivals, because horsepower alone means nothing if the rider cannot make full use of every last ounce of power. The narrow V architecture has resulted in an engine that is incredibly compact in length, offering advantages in terms of mass centralisation and minimising the inertia ellipse, which in turn made it possible to define an extremely high performance chassis.

The innovative timing system (with the chain driving only the intake camshaft, which in turn drives the exhaust camshaft via a gear) has made extremely compact heads (just 250 mm at the rear of the engine) especially in the area beneath the frame spars, which are thus much narrower than would otherwise be possible.

A countershaft dampens first and second order vibrations, making the engine even smoother than a 90° V twin.

The monobloc crankcase with integrated cylinder liners ensures maximum rigidity and consistent performance.

State of the art electronics

The electronic management system is another example of the V4 engine’s technological supremacy. Full Ride-by-Wire technology eliminates any direct connection between the throttle grip and the throttle valves, which are entirely controlled by a latest Marelli control unit that also controls the ignition and the 8 injectors (the 4 secondary fan pattern injectors come into play at high loads).

Each bank has a dedicated servo unit actuating its own two throttle bodies only. This means that the aperture of the four throttle valves and, as a consequence, the quantity of fuel injected, can be controlled independently. This solution, applied here for the first time ever in a production bike, opens up practically infinite possibilities for power delivery control. This technology offers immediately tangible benefits to the rider, with triple mapping (adjusting power delivery and maximum power) selectable directly from the handlebar allowing the character of the bike to be modified to suit the rider’s personal riding style or the track conditions at any time.

The transmission has also been designed to the meet most advanced criteria to offer the maximum performance possible. To underscore the racing soul of the V4 engine, it is mated to a cassette gearbox with a wet sump lubrication system (with oil in the crankcase). The wet clutch features a mechanical slipper system for optimised engine braking torque control and stability under hard braking.

Chassis

Aprilia bikes have always been world famous for the superiority of these chassis. RSV4 R raises the bar even higher with a totally state of the art chassis architecture which, drawing from the expertise accumulated by Aprilia in years of racing and victories, tames the explosive power of the V4 engine to offer the rider absolute control over the bike.
Quite simply, the RSV4 R is the best package available today for the rider demanding the utmost in performance in a bike that is as exciting as a track day machine as it is fun to ride on the open road.

Perfectly centralised masses is just one of the strengths of the RSV4 R chassis. To achieve this result, every single aspect has been optimised down to the tiniest detail. As on a racing machine, the fuel tank is positioned so that the majority of the fuel sits under the saddle optimising bike balance and cancelling out handling differences between full and empty tank conditions.

In keeping with consolidated Aprilia traditions, the aluminium frame of the RSV4 R exploits the strength and flexibility of cast and pressed elements, which are welded together in a structure setting new benchmarks in terms of balance and dynamic efficiency. The result is maximum torsional stiffness and flexional stiffness optimised for total bike control. This means that the Aprilia RSV4 R is not just a bike with devastating performance, but one whose greatest strength is precisely the incredible ease with which any rider can access its full potential. The swingarm also uses the same constructional technology as the frame and offers the same perfect balance between flexional and torsional stiffness to contribute to the extraordinary handling capabilities of the RSV4 R.

The unique construction technology of the frame and swingarm allows them both to proudly flaunt the naturally gleaming colour of aluminium, yet another feature that is increasingly rarer in production bikes that contributes to pure racing look of the RSV4 R.

Suspension

Completing the chassis is a superlative suspension layout – the upside down Showa fork has 43 mm diameter stanchions and features adjustable spring preload and hydraulic compression and rebound damping.
The Sachs rear shock was developed from experience learned directly on the track. This sock absorber boasts a piggy back nitrogen canister (separate and mounted on the body of the unit) and adjustable spring preload, compression and rebound damping and length, allowing the height of the rear end of the bike to be altered to modify the set-up to suit different riding styles and tracks.

Completing the package is a steering damper, also by Sachs, which ensures impeccable high speed stability and millimetre precision in setting the bike up for turns.

Brakes

The brake system is, without a shadow of a doubt, the best conventional motorcycle system currently offered anywhere on the market. The monobloc radial front callipers by Brembo currently represent the state of the art in racing brake systems. Literally the best you could possibly desire.
The dual 320 mm floating steel discs employ low profile rotors and asymmetric cross-drilling, shaving approximately 500 g from the front wheel and reducing unsprung mass. The floating retainer is fastened to the flange with 6 pins only in order to minimise inertia and weight.
The brake pump is the radial type to improve lever feel and response accuracy.

The Brembo rear brake system uses a 220 mm stainless steel disc with a two piston calliper mounted directly onto the swingarm

Components

A real Superbike is special not only as far as performance is concerned but also for the care it is built with. The details on the RSV4 R speak volumes of a bike built with an obsessive attention to every single aspect, both technical and otherwise.

The following are just some of the most significant class leading components used:

– Instrument panel: the mixed type (digital-analogue), it receives all the information from the CAN line and becomes an integral and crucial part of the self-diagnosis system as it is fitted with memory.This is a fully fledged on-board computer, with a dot matrix display set against a minimalist, ultramodern and compact design. Its functions have been improved and are all accessible from three easy to use buttons.

– Headlight: the triple headlamp layout is not just a reference to the legendary original RSVMille, but designed to offer total night time visibility.

The RSV4 mission was well-defined from the word go: to be the world’s fastest sports bike both on the track and on the road.
This was true for the Factory version, and is still the case for the R version, too.
If we had the advantage, for the Factory version, of “arms” absolutely out of the ordinary in terms of vehicle equipment, it’s on the R that the positive basic features of the RSV4 project really emerge in all their glory, to the extent that we’ve gone well beyond the performance levels of our best competitors. The riding pleasure and feeling of overall equilibrium are sensations that every rider should experience. And even in comparison with the Factory, the difference in terms of lap times is minimal, or sometimes inexistent.
It’s worth remembering that various possible engine configurations were taken into consideration when the project was first set up: 3 in line, 4 in line, V4 with 90° cylinder banks, and narrow V4.
The narrow V4 was chosen firstly for its guarantee of extreme compactness of the masses, and secondly for the need to capitalise on the great and positive experience built up over the years with the twin cylinder RSV 1000, in terms of general vehicle equilibrium.
I should point out that of the three possible layouts, the one we chose was, at the time, definitely the most expensive in terms of development costs and the cost of each single vehicle. A difference that obviously becomes even more marked when compared with any type of twin cylinder.
Aprilia’s challenge with the RSV4 R therefore became that of offering the customer greater value compared with all our competitors’ products, but at a similar price, or even lower.
In my opinion, the fact that we obtained this result is an important technical and industrial success for both Aprilia and the entire Piaggio Group. We believe the Aprilia RSV4 R is the sports bike with the absolute best quality-performance/price ratio in the world today.

Claudio Lombardi – RSV4 Engine project manager

“Unique” is a word used so often for new products that it’s lost some of its meaning. And yet this is the only adjective that I can find to describe the engine of the Aprilia RSV4.
An engine that’s the result of a “high risk” project and of the challenge launched by Aprilia’s chassis engineers towards the engine experts: to produce an engine with a high level of specific power (180 cv/l) – therefore four cylinders – without jeopardising the manageability and manoeuvrability offered by the twin cylinder RSV 1000. These were the necessary features:
– the mass extremely “concentrated” around the vehicle’s centre of gravity in both the longitudinal and transversal directions;
– the maximum control of the driving torque supplied by the engine.
The engine experts’ reply to this challenge was:
– narrow V architecture (65°);
– fully electronic engine management, using Ride-by-Wire.

No engine in this category – supersports production – had these features: we had to develop a project right from scratch, without any points of reference. It was a huge challenge, as is always the case when you’re developing real innovative products. The team that I had the pleasure of leading was rewarded by the unanimous success and appreciation earned by the RSV4, as well as the great competitiveness demonstrated straight away in the Superbike World Championship, with the irreplaceable contribution of the great Max Biaggi and the technical and sports know-how of Aprilia Racing.
Today, the R version of the RSV4 project offers sports motorcyclists a product that’s accessible, yet still maintaining the motoring performance levels that are the foundation stones of the project. I’m sure it’ll be as successful as the Factory version, extending it to an ever wider clientele.

Throughout the period of the RSV4 project, right from the first meeting with that famous “blank paper” on the table, two teams – the racing one and the production one – worked side by side. We compared ideas on every aspect, evaluating the various proposals to arrive at an agreement every time.
It’s no secret that the engine configuration (a V4 that’s absolutely unique in the production world) was chosen with the precise aim of winning on the track.
But the entire RSV4 project was based on the twofold goal of excelling both in competitions and on the market.
From the performance point of view, all the dimensional and technical calculations were made within the racing department. Mr. Lombardi, who worked with us to develop the engine, was the key player of a great job; the resulting engine offers as standard certain technical features that we regularly use on the racing version. For use in SBK, also the transmission is a faithful ally: the fact of having a totally removable solution – just like for the RSV4 R – allows us to work on the gear set-up directly on the track, so we can adapt the bike to any surface. The slipper clutch and Ride By Wire throttle grip (which we’d already introduced back in 2002 for the MotoGP RS3) are particularly interesting, too; in our case it intervenes in the hard braking phase, managing the engine brake.

We worked painstakingly on the style of the RSV4, knowing we had a beautiful mechanics that deserved to be left on full view. That’s how the idea of a minimal fairing was born, and from there our experience in the wind tunnel drove us to push that concept to the limit. We simply realised that a short fairing evacuates the heat better. At the same time we were able to reduce the width as well, thanks to the exceptional measurements of the V4. The limited dimensions of the tail fairing make it stand out, so it seems to be moulded from the bottom up; it’s a sort of design symbol in this search for minimalist forms. And all this still assures a degree of comfort that I believe to be extraordinary for a supersports bike like the RSV4R.
Throughout the process, our clear aim was always to create a bike immediately recognisable as an Aprilia. This goal led to design choices like that of the three headlamps – as a tribute to the first version of the twin cylinder RSV – that allowed us to open up important slits for airbox respiration, and the design of the rims (resulting from the exceptional racing experience of our company).

It was clear from the start that the RSV4 wasn’t just a question of developing a bike, but of creating a project made up of various steps, with the overall aim of bringing Aprilia back to the top levels of world motorcycling both on the track and in the market.
A project whose goal was to plough a furrow in the world of supersports bikes and which, for this very reason, developed around the most practical choices in the search for top levels of performance and sporting flair.
Ironically, the brand new RSV4 R was the most complicated step from the engineering viewpoint, as we had to maintain all the special features of the sisters SBK and Factory, but on a bike designed to offer performance and technology to everyone, and with a product ready to let every rider reach his own limit straight away, raising his personal crossbar lap after lap.
To reach this goal, we concentrated above all on the development of the suspension system, settings and mapping. The end result was amazing, even for us, as the new RSV4 R is extremely effective with high performance levels, but can also be used by less specialised but equally expert, demanding riders. DESIGN: the quest for ultimate compactness

This is how RSV4 Factory was created, a motorcycle that sets new performance and riding standards while opening new horizons in ultra-sports motorcycle design. Just a few simple and distinctive styling elements highlight rather than conceal the specific technical features of the Aprilia RSV4 Factory. In line with Aprilia traditions, the design of RSV4 Factory does not focus merely on looks but it serves technology and performance. Every detail has been conceived not just to be unique and beautiful, but also and above all to be efficient.

The needs of the optimised dynamic intake system feeding the V4 defined the strong-charactered front, with extra-large air intakes that not only develop considerable overpressure in the airbox (approx. 35 mb @ 280 km/h), but also completely separate the headlamps from the bottom of the fairing. This results in an absolutely unique style, never seen before on a sports motorcycle. The look of the RSV4 Factory is absolutely original, technological and definitely aggressive. Smaller, lower and narrower than any 4 cylinder bike before, the RSV4 Factory’s extreme compactness is its strength, together with an almost obsessive pursuit of perfect ergonomics (crucial for perfect riding control), which has always distinguished Aprilia’s road and World Championship dominating motorcycles.

In depth aerodynamic studies minimised surfaces without compromising the bike’s class-leading aerodynamics. ENGINE: an exclusive 65° V4

The pursuit of maximum engine performance in a supersport motorcycle must be accompanied by a perfectly positioned engine in the frame. Mass centralisation, swingarm length and optimum weight distribution are ingredients for achieving the most competitive bike, together with the pursuit of maximum power and perfect power delivery.

Aprilia engineers have known for years that a narrow V engine layout is the ideal technical solution for obtaining a class-beating chassis architecture that emphasises the performance of the engine. It is no coincidence that the RSV 1000 twin, launched in 1998, is still universally acknowledged as the sports motorcycle with the best chassis ever. Even the multiple race-winning RSA 250 GP motorcycles (5 world championship victories in the last three seasons) produced by Aprilia’s race division have a V engine. Aprilia was able to draw from its extensive expertise gained in years of unrivalled supremacy in the Motorcycle World Championship; hence, when the time for defining the new Superbike came, after evaluating all possible solutions, a narrow V engine was chosen. A 65° V-4 cylinder engine, the only solution that could ensure unparalleled performance, enabling the outstanding chassis architecture that has defined all Aprilia racing motorcycles for the past twenty years.

Besides the exclusive configuration that makes the 65° V4 unique around the world, the technical advantages of the Aprilia four-cylinder engine can be summarised as follows:

” Perfectly integrated into the frame, with optimal mass centralisation and minimised inertia for benchmark agility.
” Absolute slimness, its overall width is comparable to that of a twin cylinder motorcycle, with huge benefits in terms of ergonomics and aerodynamics.
” The compactness of the engine makes a very oversquare cylinder layout possible, using large bores and subsequently larger valves, helping the engine breathe more freely and achieve higher engine speeds (14,000 usable rpm).

The engine was entirely developed by Aprilia’s Research and Development Division, aiming at offering record performance and ridability in compliance with the strictest reliability and quality standards.
Aprilia’s V4 design exploited the most powerful calculation programmes currently available on the market, resulting in a highly optimised engine layout. By slightly opening the angle of the V (with respect to a 60° V engine), the designers could make use of the larger space to optimise the inlet ducts and maximise engine efficiency. The RSV4 engine has class-leading fluid dynamics attributes that no narrow V engine can match.

The unique timing system makes extremely compact heads possible (measuring only 250 mm high at the rear), especially in the area beneath the frame spars, which are thus much narrower than would otherwise be possible. The lateral timing chain drives the intake camshaft only and follows an optimised path for improved timing precision and chain durability.

A gear pair at the centre of the cylinder bank transmits drive to the exhaust camshaft. This solution made it possible to obtain an extremely compact head in the exhaust area. The V4 is even more compact than the V60 Magnesium twin mounted on the RSV 1000 R.
A countershaft dampens vibrations even more than in a 90° V engine. The crankcase is a monobloc configuration with integrated cylinder liners for maximum rigidity and consistent performance.

Electronics of the Future
Aprilia’s RSV4 Factory engine features full Ride by Wire technology. There is no direct connection between throttle grip and the throttle valves, which are completely controlled by a latest generation Marelli control unit.
Each bank has a dedicated servo unit actuating the two relevant throttle bodies only. Hence the two banks, and subsequently the quantity of fuel injected, can be managed independently. While this solution has been tried and tested by Aprilia, it has never been applied before on such a powerful engine, thus opening up practically infinite possibilities for power delivery control. This technology immediately benefits the rider who, thanks to the triple mapping that can be controlled directly from the handlebar, can change the engine delivery mode and thus the motorcycle’s temperament at any time.

The fuel supply uses two injectors per cylinder: one injector is placed downstream of the throttle valve and a “shower” injector is placed in the airbox and starts working at high loads and revs. The technological excellence of the V4 engine is complemented by electronically controlled variable length intake ducts. At low revs and loads, the long duct favours torque and smooth power delivery. When top performance is required, the upper part of the intake duct raises, thus shortening the duct and leaving the engine free to express its full power potential. A butterfly valve in the exhaust further optimises power delivery.

The transmission was also designed according to the most advanced criteria. To underscore the racing soul of the V4 engine, a cassette gearbox is used, with a multiplate wet clutch disc equipped with a mechanical slipper system to optimise engine braking torque and ensure stability under hard braking.
Lastly, in order to minimise weight, Aprilia’s new engine makes large use of ultralight materials; all valve covers and external housings are made from magnesium.

CHASSIS: Aprilia’s entire racing know-how

A unique engine like Aprilia V4 could be nothing but combined with an extraordinary chassis that stresses the uniqueness of this motorcycle. Years of races and victories at the top level melts into a racing chassis implemented by Aprilia’s research and development department, with construction solutions and adjustments that only racing prototypes can boast.

Perfect mass centralisation was a must when the RSV4 Factory frame was being developed. Everything was designed in order to achieve the best possible result, starting from the tank position (crucial for riding) with most of the fuel under the saddle in order to optimise motorcycle balance and eliminate any riding differences between full and empty tank.
There is no doubt: Aprilia RSV4 Factory is a true track-ready motorcycle, and a front/rear weight distribution of 52/48 confirms this.

Frame
In line with Aprilia race division traditions, the RSV4 structure uses castings and aluminium pressings that are welded to create a far more rigid frame than that of the RSV 1000 twin, which was already a benchmark. In particular, torsional and flexural rigidities were optimised in order to offer perfect feeling and control as well as the ability to handle high power outputs such as those of the Superbike version.

Notwithstanding the higher performance, the RSV4 Factory frame weighs almost the same as the RSV, at only 10.1 kg, a lightness matched only by racing frames. The special construction technology also allows both the frame and the swingarm to show the natural and shining colour of the aluminium, which makes the appearance of the RSV4 Factory very similar to that of a racing prototype.

Designed using the knowledge acquired during GP racing, the spectacular swingarm of the RSV4 Factory, like its frame, is made by combining castings (the internal part and the swingarm pin/wheel connection areas) with aluminium bent sheet elements (the external part) to form a very rigid but super light box section capable of minimising the moving masses, exalting the reactivity and sensibility of the motorcycle to the suspension adjustments. The asymmetric conformation, with an arch section on the right side and a reinforcing arch on the left, made it possible to implement an exhaust system with optimised internal volumes without penalising the rigidity of the swingarm. Here too, FEM modelling was used in the design process to optimise cross sections and thicknesses. The swingarm of the RSV4 Factory weighs only 5,100 grams, close to the absolute standard threshold for this technical element.

The desire to offer the first four V cylinder “race ready” superbike in the world led Aprilia to find unique solutions that will hardly be found on competitors’ bikes even in the years to come.
In order to boost chassis performance and make it match the rider’s style and wishes, or features of the track, Aprilia RSV4 Factory ensures a combination of adjustments that are pretty much infinite. The multi-adjustable suspensions, taken for granted on a motorcycle of this level, are combined with adjustments of the headstock position and rake (through interchangeable bushings), the rear end height, the swingarm pin height and – introducing a new capability exclusive to this bike – the engine position in the frame.
Aprilia RSV4 Factory is the most highly adjustable production motorcycle in the world, just like a real race bike.

Suspension
The Öhlins Racing upside-down fork has 43-mm stanchions and is titanium nitride coated to minimise friction. The wheel travel is 120 mm. Like in race motorcycles, the fork allows precision adjustment for hydraulic compression and rebound damping and spring preload.
The Öhlins Racing rear shock absorber is equipped with a “Piggy Back” nitrogen canister and can be adjusted for spring preload, compression and rebound damping and length, thus allowing the height of the rear end of the bike to be changed to adjust the set-up to the different riding styles and tracks. The wheel travel is 130 mm.
The motorcycle is also equipped with an Öhlins Racing adjustable steering damper.

Brakes
The front system is without a shadow of a doubt the best system available on the market. Brembo monobloc radial callipers are the state-of-the-art in racing braking systems thanks to their power, high modulability and fatigue resistance.
The dual 320-mm diameter stainless steel floating discs are completely new and were developed by Aprilia specifically for this motorcycle. A rotor with reduced height and asymmetric perforation were used, allowing the braking power to be improved and the front wheel to be lightened by approximately 500 grams. The floating retainer is fastened to the flange with 6 pins only in order to minimise inertia and weight.
The brake pump is the radial type to improve lever feel and response accuracy. The rear braking system is Brembo “Serie Oro” with 220-mm diameter stainless steel disc and two-piston caliper, with racing-type pump and integrated tank.

Rims
The search for greater lightness led to implementation of new forged aluminium rims. The original design further decreases the weight (approximately 1 kg less than the RSV 1000 twin) which, together with the new brake discs, minimises unsprung mass and rotating mass inertia, benefiting motorcycle responsiveness.

Components
A real Superbike is special not only as far as performance is concerned but also for the care it is built with. With regard to the RSV4 Factory, the details say it all: no other “race ready” motorcycle has ever been built with such care. The attention paid to its construction not only satisfies the desire for beauty (a motorbike built like RSV4 Factory is in any case gorgeous), but most of all aims at achieving the goal: to win. – Instrument panel: the mixed type (digital-analogue), it receives all the information from the CAN line and becomes an integral and crucial part of the self-diagnosis system as it is fitted with memory. It is a real onboard computer, fitted with a dot matrix display inserted in a minimal, extremely modern and compact design that provides all the information relating to the use of the motorcycle, including: shift light, engaged gear indication, indication of the engine map being used and chronometer with time storing memory. Its functionality was improved to reach a level that is even better than that of the best products available on the market, all use modes are controlled from the left hand switchgear unit so the hands can always remain on the handlebar.

– the front headlamp uses three elements that call to mind of the first RSV 1000 twin, proving to be perfectly integrated, even from the structural point of view, with the top fairing and creating a very distinctive front. The parabolic mirror was designed with modern calculation systems that led to an excellent result: maximum visibility at night with reduced weight and size.

– The electrical system was designed in order to achieve maximum functionality, rationality and minimum weight: the result is an extremely clean and compact layout that makes maintenance operations easier and is preset for use on the racetrack as the parts dedicated to the headlamps can be easily removed. Even the turn indicators – with the front indicators incorporated in the rear view mirrors and the rear indicators in the license plate holder – can be removed quickly for use on the track, the real hunting ground of Aprilia RSV4 Factory.

The evolution of the Shiver project has no limits. The Aprilia naked that has surprised the world with its technological content which is still not within reach of its competitors, has perfected itself even further with interventions that aim at increasing its personality, riding fun and ergonomic features.
In terms of special features, Aprilia Shiver 2010 is without doubt the benchmark bike in the medium cc naked sector. A highly evolved engine fitted with latest generation integral Ride by Wire, a multimap, a first-rate chassis which is able to satisfy all levels of riders, and technical outfit that no other bike even comes close to.

Today, these features are highlighted by an even more racing look, with the arrival of a new top fairing and aggressive Wave discs. At the same time, Aprilia Shiver has come even closer to satisfying the needs of riders, with totally revamped ergonomics, a 5 cm slimmer saddle to provide better control optimising bike handling not only on the road, but also when the engine is switched off. The rider and passenger footpegs are also new and contribute to lending the bike an enhanced sporting look. The moved-back rider footpegs and the new handlebar inclination allow for a more sporting use. Thanks to these updates the Aprilia Shiver M.Y. 2010 is now a far more fascinating bike.

There are a few key issues which mark the success of Shiver. It is a high-performance efficient bike which can seduce even the most demanding rider, but it is also able to bring on those who are new to the two-wheeled scene, as it is so easy to ride. The 2010 version maintains this as a prerogative. In fact, the new lower and slimmer saddle provides for extra and more effective control.

Design

The new Shiver roundly focuses on racing aspects. The new colours, the wave-style discs and the new racing rider footpegs are just a few of the signals that Shiver sends out to those observing it. The line remains very streamline and Italian and thanks to the clever use of the new colours and graphics, Shiver moves up a few notches as far as balance and aggression are concerned, highlighting some techniques that really make a difference, such as, for instance, the side shock absorber or the mixed steel trellis frame and aluminium plates.

The engine

The V90 engine is the result of the extensive experience Aprilia has in high performance mechanics. Thanks to its peculiar technical features the Aprilia twin-cylinder is able to combine an exceptionally high level of output with maximum exploitation rates and user-friendly riding options. The research conducted to reach top performance levels in its category has led to the decision to adopt some advanced cutting-edge technical solutions. The Aprilia V2 750 engine has a number of core features: extremely generous torque over most of the rpm range, insignificant vibrations, smooth full power delivery and output levels which are top in its category.

The 2010 version of Shiver naturally uses the multi-map integral Ride by Wire technology that has been developed even further exploiting the racing experience gained with the RSV4 superbike. This technical solution obviously represents the state-of-the-art version of engine control systems and Aprilia Shiver confirms its technological leadership position in its sector.
One touch of starter button is all that is needed when the rider decides to select one of the three mappings, and radically change the character of the bike:

– “Sport” to have the “throttle in hand” when a rider needs to let off steam exploiting the entire character of this Italian twin cylinder bike;
– “Touring” when smoother power delivery and fluidity are essential during the moments when the racing desires are set aside to enjoy a more relaxing ride, even two-up;
– “Rain” when grip is not as good as it should be and maximum safety is the main objective.

Thanks to the technical solutions installed on this bike the V90 Aprilia is able to achieve outstanding output values. A maximum output of 95 hp at 9,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7,000 rpm are exceptional performances. The amazing torque available even at bottom end means that nothing can beat Shiver on mixed tracks.
Chassis

The saying goes ‘never change a winning team’ and this is what Aprilia Shiver M.Y. 2010 focused on when choosing the chassis elements used on previous versions, starting from the tube trellis frame and the aluminium plates. The engine is exceptionally compact length-wise making it possible to obtain a highly agile bike, which is also helped by the particular choice to install the shock absorber on the side: this is not simply an aesthetic choice but a precise technical decision as it frees some extra space for the exhaust which can then benefit from optimal volumes.
The aluminium swingarm with the stiffener brace is dimensioned to withstand the asymmetrical stress caused by the lateral position of the shock absorber. The swingarm has benchmark rigidity levels in this category.

Suspension

The upside down fork has 43 mm stanchions with chill-cast bottom end to support the radial callipers and provide unparalleled smooth sliding action. The 120 mm travel makes it possible to easily face both urban and mountain roads.
The lateral shock absorber is fitted directly to the swingarm using a cantilever set-up and the spring preload and hydraulic rebound are adjustable; the rear wheel travel is 130 mm.

Brakes

Last year version already mounted the radial callipers, which are a solution that made this a pioneer bike in this sector. The Shiver 2010 version adds the new Wave discs and this choice not only provides for a different aesthetic impact, but also for a more decisive braking action.
The rear brake features a 245mm disc with single piston calliper to provide adequate support to the front system. The brake master cylinders have also been revamped to ensure even more effective braking response.

Both the front and rear systems have metal braided braking pipes, derived from the aeronautic sector, which eliminate the annoying buffering effect of conventional pipes and guarantee maximum braking accuracy and top-class system.

It also comes in an ABS version, and adopts a 2-channel Continental system which is able to guarantee maximum levels of safety when braking in all conditions.

ENGINE
The powerful but reliable, single cylinder, two stroke, Rotax-Aprilia engine needs no introduction. Over the years it has won a reputation for being unbeatable on the track and dependable on the road.
Still today, this engine boasts technical solutions that are state-of-the-art for two strokes, including a crankcase reed valve intake, liquid cooling, an anti-vibration balancer shaft, and an automatic mixing system. The RS 125’s engine has been constantly updated over the years to keep in line with the latest emission control legislation without penalising performance. A catalytic converter and precision carburation has won Aprilia’s single cylinder two stroke homologation to Euro 3 standards. And the amazing thing is that this has been achieved without losing out on performance: the Aprilia RS 125 engine remains the reference point for all 125 cc powerplants.

CHASSIS
Without a doubt, the most advanced single component on the RS 125 is its frame. Developed from Aprilia’s vast experience in GP 125 racing, the RS 125 frame is made from cast aluminium alloy with cross-ribbing reinforcement. Despite its extremely light weight, this advanced structure achieves amazing torsional rigidity, setting the standards for Aprilia’s competitors.

The box section, aluminium alloy swingarm has the highest torsional rigidity of all production 125 cc swingarms. Maximum power is 102 kW (139 HP) at the crank and maximum torque 10.9 kgm at only 8,500 rpm. The Aprilia Tuono is therefore among the most powerful of all nakeds.

STYLING

On the Tuono 1000, design is at the service of performance and comfort. Every little detail has been developed not only to attract admiration for its refined style, but to be totally functional too.
The new, aggressive nose fairing, with closely mounted twin headlights, has been developed in wind tunnel testing to provide effective protection for the rider and to kill lift at high speeds, ensuring maximum precision and control.

The two lateral spoilers, for example, not only look great but also serve an important aerodynamic purpose. They help keep the bike stable at high speed and keep the wind off the rider’s legs. It is partly thanks to these spoilers that the Tuono 1000 provides better aerodynamic protection than any other naked.

The design team has also gone to great lengths to ensure that, unlike other nakeds, the Tuono 1000 benefits from race-tuned engine breathing. The Tuono 1000 is the only naked with a dynamic air intake located directly under the nose fairing, and a duct to channel ram air through the frame to the airbox. Yet more proof of the Tuono 1000’s uncompromising racing soul!

On the Tuono, ergonomics is one of the bike’s strong points. The seating position has been carefully designed to give the rider maximum control over the front end. The handlebar risers are lower and the footrests have been moved further back, so that the riding position is sportier and more effective. Despite this, overall comfort has even improved, so that riding is less tiring.

THE V60 MAGNESIUM EVOLUTION ENGINE

The latest 1000 cc V 60 Magnesium Evolution engine is derived from that of the RSV 1000 R Factory, with only a few minor changes to improve torque and muscle at low revs. The engine has been thoroughly redesigned to maintain its reputation as the best twin cylinder engine in production. So performance is more amazing than ever, with 100% usable power and, of course, that proverbial Aprilia reliability.

Engine breathing has been improved by bigger exhaust valves (enlarged from 31 to 33 mm in diameter) and new, larger diameter exhaust collector pipes. Thanks to these improvements, the V60 Magnesium Evolution that drives the Tuono 1000 puts out more power than ever, 139 HP at 9,500 rpm, while also boosting torque to an impressive 10.9 Kgm at 8,500 rpm, a figure that tells you all you need to know about the muscle that Aprilia’s V twin can deliver even at low revs.

The silencers have catalytic converters installed nearer to the collector pipes. This solution has reduced converter activation time by 50% while further reducing the level of exhaust emissions, keeping tem well within the strict limits required for Euro 3 homologation.

Optimised fluid dynamics inside the cylinder heads are enhanced by improved mapping of the combined ignition and fuel injection systems to achieve higher power throughout the useful rev range.

So let’s have a look at the main characteristics of the new V 60 Magnesium Evolution engine:

The Tuono 1000 inherits the RSV’s dynamic air intake, locating it just under the headlight cluster, in the centre of the bike where ram air pressure is highest. The Air Runner duct (which also supports the nose fairing and instruments) channels the air to a 10.3 litre airbox, designed to allow the engine to develop its full potential. The Air Runner duct ensures that pressure in the airbox increases with speed, and generates a 3% increase in engine power at maximum speed.

An engine control unit developed in conjunction with Siemens VDO provides integrated engine management. The ECU receives all essential engine parameters in real time from 15 different sensors, processes the data and, again in real time, controls the various actuators that keep the engine functioning perfectly at all times.

The unit’s flash EPROM comes with the mapping for unrestricted racing exhausts ready loaded. Aprilia’s Technical Assistance Service can therefore enable race mapping in next to no time on request.

FRAME

Every aspect of the frame, fork and suspensions has been fine tuned for perfect weight distribution. The frame is a combination of aluminium-silicon alloy castings and Peraluman 450 pressed parts. This highly sophisticated structure is not only more rigid than the previous version but lighter too. The latest frame weighs under 10 kg (9650 grams) setting an impressive new record for its class. The wheelbase is shorter too, and at 1410 mm – another record for the category – accounts for the Tuono 1000’s crisper than even handling and more instinctive ride.

The new double banana swingarm provides a clear passage for the exhaust system and weighs only 4860 grams, well under the 5 kg figure considered by experts to be the reference weight for this component.

SUSPENSION

The fork is a Showa upside down unit, with 43 mm stanchions for a perfect balance between precision on the racetrack and comfort on the road. And to ensure that the ideal setup can be achieved for all styles and conditions, on the road and on the track alike, the fork is fully adjustable in spring preload and in compression and rebound damping.

The Sachs monoshock at the rear is likewise adjustable in spring preload and rebound damping.

With the arrival of the Factory version, the meanest, most aggressive naked on the road really reveals its true racing nature. The Tuono 1000 R Factory offers a level of performance that no other twin can match. And an amazingly sophisticated chassis means that it need not fear competition even from genuine superbikes.

On the Tuono 1000 R Factory, the suspension is designed to respond instantly to input from the most expert riders. No compromises have been made to ensure ultimate handling on the racetrack. The Tuono Factory is equipped with state-of-the-art suspension. The 43 mm Öhlins upside down fork gives you unrivalled precision and sliding action. And of course, the fork is fully adjustable in spring preload, and in hydraulic compression and rebound damping. The fully adjustable Öhlins monoshock at the rear also offers perfect action and precision, and plays an essential part in ensuring the unique handling of the Tuono 1000 Factory on road and track alike.

BRAKING SYSTEM

The braking system has undergone a number of major changes. The Tuono 1000 is equipped with Brembo Gold radial calipers featuring two separate sintered pads.

The two 320 mm floating steel discs feature a narrower braking band to minimise inertia and weight and are fixed in place by Aprilia’s exclusive six spoke flange.

The rear braking system is Brembo Gold too, with a 220 mm stainless steel disc and a caliper with two 32 mm pistons.

The front and rear brakes both use aeronautical metal braided hoses to eliminate the sponginess inevitably associated with conventional brake hoses and to ensure maximum braking precision.

COMPONENTS

The following components deserve special mention.

– The dashboard is a mixed (digital-analog) unit. It uses the data received over the CAN line to perform an essential autodiagnostic function for which it incorporates a dedicated memory. The new dashboard control unit performs the same functions as the previous unit (including the 40 lap timer) but is more compact and modern in design and extremely lightweight. User friendliness has improved too, with all functions controlled from two practical push-buttons on the left hand light switch.

The LED backlighting can also be adjusted to three levels of intensity.
” The headlight cluster is derived from that of the RSV, and incorporates four light units for perfect night-time visibility.

Evolution in the name of competitiveness: this is the mission of Aprilia’s RXV 4.5/5.5 model year 2009. Experience gained from Aprilia Racing’s excellent results in the Enduro World Championship has led to Aprilia designers and engineers transferring even more race technology into this amazing production motorcycle.

Everybody involved with the RXV has worked hard and in close co-operation to introduce a number of major improvements compared to last year’s motorcycle, making this year’s model even more “race ready”, and better able to deliver complete satisfaction to demanding amateur and professional riders.

DESIGN: DETAILS COUNT

As with all Aprilia motorcycles, a tremendous amount of care and attention has been lavished on even the smallest details on the RXV.

As a result the RXV boasts a unique, unmistakable styling that is nevertheless fully functional in achieving the sort of unrivalled performance that a genuine competition motorcycle demands.

Essential, decisive lines convey a sensation of lightness and build quality. The RXV’s designers have been eager to incorporate the features that distinguish all Aprilias, and have launched a whole new type of off-road motorcycle. Everyone appreciates technology like the V twin engine, mixed steel trellis frame and sculpted swingarm. The tail and rear side panels are totally different in styling from traditional off-road designs. Whichever way you look at it, the RXV presents a host of stunning technical solutions, all enhanced by original racing colors to express the aggressive nature of this born-to-race mean machine.

Every aspect of the bike features intelligent design solutions. Fixed air ducts, for example, allow the fuel tank to tilt up for easy access to the air filter box.

Everything about the RXV is dedicated to winning races. The quest for technical perfection has led the design team to improve even the smallest details on the basis of input from the multi time champions who have raced the RXV.

ENGINE: CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION

The amazing 45.2 engine is, of course, the centre piece of RXV technology. Aprilia was the first manufacturer in the world to believe in the validity of V twin architecture in a market segment in which all other marques still cling rigidly to single cylinder engines. Aprilia’s high-tech V twin design has already proven to be 100% reliable in competition. Even homologation for road use has not compromised the technology and performance of this exceptional engine, which is produced entirely by Aprilia. Since the earliest stages of the design process, the 45.2 has evolved to keep pace with chassis development and to give the RXV an unbeatable mix of power and handling.

The 77° V angle is the result of extensive testing, aimed not only at boosting power but also at reducing vibration. As a result Aprilia’s engineers have been able to eliminate engine balancer shafts. Despite this the 45.2 engine still vibrates far less than any single cylinder alternative.

The cylinders themselves are integrated in the crankcase and have replaceable wet liners. This unique layout has allowed the engine ancillaries to be arranged in a way that achieves extremely compact dimensions. The results are amazing: the Aprilia V twin is one of the most compact twins in the world, and smaller in size than many singles of similar displacement.

All design choices have been taken in order to obtain maximum ridability and an extended power band for off-road riding.

The sophisticated electronic engine management system, developed by Aprilia Racing, incorporates numerous innovations for the off-road segment.

The injection system features 38 mm throttle bodies (40 mm on the 550) and is managed by a programmable control unit. The new ECU and stepper motor throttle bodies make starting much easier under all conditions, and deliver smoother and more controllable power too.

Reduced unitary displacement has allowed Aprilia to develop an extremely compact and lightweight crankshaft. The engine is more responsive to variations in throttle opening as a result, and the bike as a whole is faster and more maneuverable thanks to the reduced gyroscopic effect from the crankshaft.

In the MY ’09 the flywheel has increased in weight to improve power delivery and achieve a smoother ride.

The single overhead cam configuration with four titanium valves per cylinder head represents an ideal compromise between compact size, light weight and high performance.

Thanks to its advanced technology, the 45.2 is also an extremely silent running and ecological engine. Technology, after all, should mean reliability and longevity as well as high performance. The 45.2 engine touches new heights in this direction, and permits extremely easy access to parts requiring regular maintenance like the spark plugs, oil filter and air filter.

Just as much effort has been put into weight reduction, and the 45.2 engine sets a new record for a V twin with an electric starter. Abundant use has been made of prestige lightweight materials. The central crankcase sections are in aluminum-silicon alloy; external engine casings are in magnesium; the valves are in titanium; and all gears are exceptionally light in weight.

A closer look at the unique characteristics of the 45.2 engine:

CHASSIS: LIGHTER THAN EVER

An uncompromising machine like the RXV demands a great chassis.

The perimeter frame has been developed in conjunction with the engine, with the result that the 2009 RXV has lost 2 kg in weight. The tubular steel trellis structure is interference fitted to forged aluminum side members to form an extremely rigid whole.

The engine itself forms an integral part of the chassis, acting as a load bearing element and contributing to overall rigidity.

The variable section aluminum alloy swingarm has been made even lighter to reduce rigidity and improve traction.

The rising rate suspension linkage is damped by a fully adjustable Sachs monoshock with piggy back cylinder and two different hydraulic settings for high and low speeds.

The calibration of the rear suspension has been modified for 2009 to improve stability and control over rough surfaces.

The 45 mm upside down fork also boasts new settings for greater high speed stability and improved damping over rocky ground, and can be adjusted to suit the needs of more expert users.

BRAKING SYSTEM

The advanced technology and high performance of the RXV chassis are reflected in a superb braking system. The RXV features lightweight wave discs (270 mm at the front) for maximum braking control even under the most challenging conditions.

The 240 mm rear disc is braked by a single piston caliper (lighter than on the previous model) for a perfect combination of power and control.

A V-four engine with total electronic management, and an exceptionally light and compact chassis are just some of the features that make this bike unique in the world of motorcycling. The revolutionary design of the Aprilia RSV4 comes directly from Europe’s biggest and most successful racing team.

The Aprilia RSV4 is powered by the most revolutionary and most powerful engine ever developed by Aprilia. This 65° V four unit is based on an architecture that is unique in the world of supersport motorcycles, and features refined engineering combined with prestigious materials and advanced electronic management solutions.

The new engine uses multi-mapping ride-by-wire technology, a solution that opens up new horizons in engine control, and offers virtually infinite opportunities for power delivery and traction control (present as standard on the racing version).

The choice of a narrow V layout has led to the development of an incredibly narrow engine. This in turn has permitted weight to be centralised and chassis performance dramatically improved (thanks to a short wheelbase and long swingarm). The narrow V-four configuration permits a longer stroke to be used, with clear benefits in terms of improved engine breathing. High engine speeds can therefore be reached without having to extend the width of the crankcase. This is fundamentally important to aerodynamics and manoeuvrability (two characteristics for which Aprilia motorcycles have always been universally acclaimed).

The monobloc cylinder block features integrated liners for maximum rigidity and consistent efficiency. The air intake trumpets are variable in length. Each bank of cylinders has a servomotor dedicated exclusively to the operation of their two throttle bodies. The aperture of the four butterfly valves, and therefore the volume of air inducted, can therefore be controlled independently. This solution opens up new horizons in electronic engine and power management, resulting in truly advanced integral traction control. A cassette type gearbox and a slipper clutch demonstrate the racing character of this engine.

The Aprilia RSV4 has been designed and developed with competition in mind, and naturally offers all the adjustments normally found on racing machines. In particular, this most powerful Aprilia ever made stands out for its complete range of chassis adjustments. The variable geometry frame not only allows you to change parameters like headstock angle (thanks to interchangeable steering bushings), but even lets you adjust swingarm and engine position. Racing technology has been used for all aspects of construction. The RSV4’s aluminium frame and swingarm are constructed from a clever mix of thick-walled parts and variable section sheet.

All components are naturally of the highest calibre. They include an Öhlins fork, rear monoshock and steering damper, Brembo monobloc brake calipers and forged aluminium wheels.

The styling of the Aprilia RSV4 has followed the same approach as the rest of the design. The RSV4’s racing character is clear from every component, and from the absence of solutions chosen only for appearances. As a result the overall design of the RSV4 and the advanced technology of its component parts merge into a uniquely harmonious whole that is superbly functional on the racetrack – the natural habitat of this latest Aprilia.

The fairing has been developed in the wind tunnel. Minimal in size, it in no way detracts from the stunning technology of the engine. The frame/engine system is fully visible and bulges like muscles beyond the fairing.

The triple headlight cluster makes the RSV4 instantly recognisable and unique from the very first glance.

The superbly lightweight tail slopes upwards to emphasise the dynamic nature of the Aprilia RSV4. Even when stationary, the bike simply exudes a desire for speed and competition.

Introduced in 2007, the Aprilia Shiver 750 gained instant acclaim from the media and the motorcycling public for its unique characteristics. Here was the naked we had all been waiting for.

From everyday use to a trip along mountain passes or use on the racetrack, the Aprilia Shiver 750 is completely at home in any situation, guaranteeing pure riding pleasure at all times.

THE DESIGN: SHAPE AT THE SERVICE OF POWER

As with every Aprilia product, the Shiver 750 has a highly innovative design where form and function come together to create an almost perfect object. The Aprilia Shiver 750 is pure technology as is evident from its mean, aggressive lines.

Each element has been designed to be not just beautiful but functional too. The design is refined, but at the same time clean-cut, without too many frills for the maximum possible functionality. On the Aprilia Shiver 750, the technical component becomes a design element at the same time, creating a bike both aggressive and at the same time elegant. The new colour schemes for 2009 are the icing on the cake.

The tank-seat-tail assembly further emphasises the compactness of the bike. The rider becomes one with the machine, perfectly integrated in the short, agile, and sporty bike. The strongly tapering tail also incorporates the twin exhaust with triangular silencers, a feature which makes the design even more aggressive, while keeping weight distribution highly symmetrical.

The adoption of a side shock absorber not only adds a further distinctive feature to the look of the bike, but also enables a rational, compact and effective exhaust system to be fitted.

THE V90 ENGINE: TECHNOLOGY IN THE PURE STATE

The V90 engine inherits all Aprilia’s experience in high performance mechanics. Thanks to its particular technical characteristics, the Aprilia V90 combines high specific power with maximum usability and easy riding.

This generous twin cylinder powerplant is destined to set new standards in performance and technology for medium powered bikes.

The quest for performance at the top of its class led to the adoption of a number of advanced and innovative technical features:

The Aprilia Shiver 750 is the first ever production motorcycle equipped with integral ride-by-wire electronic throttle control. Thanks to this advanced system, the Aprilia V90 engine delivers an exceptional power output for its size and configuration. Maximum power of 95 HP at 9,000 rpm and maximum torque of 81 Nm at 7,000 rpm are incredible figures for an engine of this displacement.

Impressive torque, already available at low revs, makes riding the Shiver 750 on country roads an amazing experience. And this is precisely where ride-by-wire comes into play. Trust Aprilia’s engineers to be the first to apply this technology to a naked! Ride-by-wire filters the exuberant power and torque of the V twin engine to deliver the best possible performance and control for all riders and all road conditions. The Sport mapping gives you all the sporty, aggressive power of this Aprilia V twin. Touring offers a smoother and more relaxing ride for those moments when maximum power can be abandoned in favour of a pleasant journey or a ride with a passenger. Finally, Rain reduces torque by 25% to avoid the risk of wheel slip on slippery surfaces.

THE FRAME: RATIONALITY AND EFFICIENCY

Experts have always acknowledged that Aprilia bikes have the best chassis in their class. The Aprilia Shiver 750 is concrete confirmation that once again Aprilia has managed to create a chassis which is both extremely easy and intuitive and incredibly high performance.

The design solutions associated with the 90° V twin led to the development of a rational and reliable mixed steel trellis and aluminium side plate frame.

The reduced longitudinal dimensions of the engine made it possible to obtain a short, agile bike, helped by the particular side positioning of the shock absorber. This was not a simple cosmetic mannerism, but a precise technical decision, made to free up the space needed to give the exhaust its optimal dimensions.

The aluminium swingarm with reinforcement truss has been sized specifically to support the asymmetrical stresses caused by lateral positioning of the shock absorber. The rigidity of the swingarm sets new standards for the class.

SUSPENSION

The 43 mm upside down fork with forged feet to support the radial calipers provides benchmark smoothness. The 120 mm wheel travel makes the bike equally at home on about town trips and mountain routes. The bottom steering yoke is made from forged aluminium, as is the top steering yoke too.

The side shock absorber rests directly on the swingarm, according to the cantilever principle, and provides adjustments for spring preload and hydraulic rebound. Rear wheel travel is 130 mm.

THE BRAKES

The best technology currently available is incorporated in the Aprilia Shiver 750, the first medium powered naked with a radial caliper system, a feature emphasising even further (as if it were needed) the sporty personality of the design. The 320 mm front discs are the same as used in the racing flagships, the RSV 1000 R and Tuono 1000 R.

At the back, a 245 mm disc with single piston caliper provides adequate backup for the front circuit.

The front and rear braking circuits both use aeronautical metal braid hoses to eliminate the pressure variations associated with conventional rubber brake lines, guaranteeing maximum braking precision for a top level system.

A sophisticated two channel ABS system maximises the Shiver 750 ABS’ s already impressive levels of active and passive safety by preventing wheel lock on slippery surfaces and improving braking performance. On the Shiver 750 ABS, all riders can confidently use the full power of the generous braking system, improving safety over difficult surfaces not only in a straight line but on bends too.

The heart of the FV2 1200 is Aprilia’s mighty, 1200 cc, 90° V twin, a power plant that confirms Aprilia’s determination to develop high capacity, high technology engines using in-house skills and competence.

The minimalist bodywork of the FV2 1200 creates a stunning preponderance of volume towards the front of the bike. The result is a revolutionary, courageous and futuristic look that is destined to form the solid basis for the evolution of Aprilia motorcycle styling.

The engine also fulfils a structural role, and acts as the starting point for the backbone of the motorcycle, a carbon fibre, load bearing frame with integrated filter box. The seat is supported by an aluminium beam and by two carbon fibre struts that extend into the tail and around the rear light cluster. The parallelogram front suspension is based on the system already tried and tested on Aprilia’s 250 cc GP racers.

These futuristic solutions have led to an amazing weight reduction (the FV2 1200 weighs under 160 kg) and an extremely compact size. The extraordinary agility that has always typified Aprilia motorcycles therefore finds its utmost expression in the FV2 1200.

The 1200 cc V twin engine is liquid cooled and boast a ride-by-wire control system. Traction control, a latest generation ABS system and electronic suspension management are also provided to let you ride at your performance peak while maintaining complete control over the bike.
